Basketball and all else

As Orlando licks its wounds after its team lost the National Basketball Association championship series to the Los Angeles Lakers, that event continues to dominate the local news.

Nothing abroad, nothing in government -- federal, state or local -- gets anything but subordinate mention in the mainstream media in Central Florida. True, even competing for such a prize is far less common in Orlando than it is in Los Angeles, but it seems unlikely that the Lakers' win so dominates news in that community as the Magic's loss does in this.

Interesting how people are more interested in what entertains them than what could affect the way they live.

  1. Living in Orlando too, I know what you mean. Our organization could not pitch any news stories for two weeks that were not related to the Orlando Magic. Fortunatly for us (I guess) we are partners with the Magic so that allowed us to jump on the media bandwagon. Just curious, did you buy into the idea that the trip to the Finals do good things for the city of Orlando nationwide? I heard that over and over again, and I am not sure anyone out side of LA and Orlando even cared.

  2. I think the aerial night shots of downtown made Orlando look a little more cosmopolitan than the theme-park-world image it has with quite a few people. Beyond that, I can't imagine what about watching a team compete and lose would attract visitors or business to the area. On the other hand, it likely had a psychic unifying effect for residents newly excited about the Magic, but I'm not sure that will translate to anything beyond sports.
